    3. What finishes the kitchen

    A homeowner buys cabinets and a kitchen needs more than cabinets. These are the parts people find out about late. Answer each one.

    “Not sure” is a real answer. It tells us there is a question to ask, which is more use to you than a guess. Nobody is expected to know all of this.

    Crown molding

    Crown finishes the top of the wall cabinets against the ceiling.

    Light rail

    Light rail hides under-cabinet lighting and the bottom of the wall cabinets.

    Base molding

    Base molding runs along the floor at the toe kick.

    Scribes and fillers

    Fillers close the gaps where cabinets meet walls that are not square. Most kitchens need some.

    Toe kick

    Finished toe kick covers the recess under the base cabinets.

    Finished end panels

    Any cabinet side a person can see wants a finished panel. Island backs and the end of a run are the usual ones.

    Interior accessories

    Roll-outs, trash pull-outs, cutlery and knife dividers, spice and tray pull-outs.

    Under-cabinet lighting

    Lighting under the wall cabinets, onto the counter.

    Touch-up kit

    Matching touch-up for the nicks that happen during installation.

    4. Appliances and project files

    Floor appliances create openings in a cabinet run. Built-in appliances create openings inside a cabinet. We plan them separately.

    Room builder

    Measure the walls that will receive cabinets

    Enter one wall at a time, then place doors, windows and utilities by their distance from the start of that wall. A live plan check helps catch measurements that do not fit.

    A. Floor-standing appliances

    These sit on the floor and reserve an opening between cabinets. Give the manufacturer and exact model number when you have it.

    B. Cabinet-integrated and cut-in appliances

    These need a cabinet opening, support or cutout. The installation guide for the exact model governs the design.
